Business energy renewal checklist

Prepare for your next business energy renewal

A renewal is easier to assess when the basic facts are already in order. Gather the current position before deciding whether a new proposal is useful for your business.

1 Confirm the existing contract

Identify the supplier, supply address, contract dates and relevant renewal or termination conditions. If you manage several locations, keep a separate record for each supply. Check who in the business is authorised to agree changes.

2 Understand the usage

A recent consumption history gives a more useful basis than a guess. Explain any expected change in opening hours, equipment or premises. A quote based on last year’s pattern may not reflect next year’s operation.

3 Compare on the same basis

Look at unit rates, standing charges, contract length and relevant additional terms together. Ask what the figures include and how any estimate has been calculated. Keep assumptions visible when comparing proposals.

4 Ask about the intermediary arrangement

If a broker or consultant is involved, ask which providers are considered and how fees or commission work. Read any authority document carefully so you understand the permission being requested.

5 Review the agreement before authorising it

Check the supplier, sites, prices, term and conditions. Do not treat a conversation or an enquiry form as a substitute for understanding the agreement. Keep a copy of the terms and the information used to make the decision.

Make the first conversation focused

An outline of your sites, timing and main concern is enough to start an enquiry. Share bills or detailed account records only through an agreed appropriate route.
